Anubis has released the psychedelic music video for her brand new single, Wonderland. The star memorably shot to superstardom last year as a contestant on the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, where she placed 12th and was awarded the title of ‘Miss Congeniality’ by her fellow queens.
Speaking exclusively with GAY TIMES, Anubis says the infectious electropop track – while “up for interpretation” – details her “struggles” with being eliminated in last place, which prevented her from showcasing her full skillset as a singer and comedian.
While Anubis acknowledges that being a RuGirl does come with “this wonderful life of riches and fame”, she says her placement has slightly “damaged” her career because she’s now “only seen as this queen who got eliminated first”. “It’s allowed people to not see my acting abilities or my comedy abilities or my songwriting abilities; anything I did prior to that one episode on RuPaul’s Drag Race,” she explains. “I wrote the song to talk about the fact that there are these ways you can escape and fall into alcohol or drugs. “Whatever your release is, even food… I’ve had such an unhealthy relationship in the last year-and-a-half of all of those different things, and that’s been my Wonderland.
It is my way of being completely raw and honest with my fans.” However, Anubis admits that it is “difficult no matter where you place” on RuPaul’s Drag Race because she’s had similar conversations with her close friend, Krystal Versace, who ultimately won the season over Ella Vaday and Kitty Scott-Klaus. “Me and Krystal are very close and we are the bookends of the season; I went out first and she won.
