The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.Screenings of the queer film place in select theaters around the country on Thursday, June 2.The film stars Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, and Guy Pearce as three drag performers who take their show on the road of an RV and through the Australian desert, with the goal of performing at a small-town casino.
Hitting small local bars along the way, the trio performs in fabulous costumes to classic camp hits such as Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and ABBA’s “Mamma Mia.” The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was written and directed by Stephan Elliott.
When it hit theaters in 1994, it became a blockbuster and helped introduce LGBTQ+ subjects to Australian and international audiences, according to a news release.“The exuberant spirit of Priscilla – to let your flag fly with pride for who you are – was the right message for this groundbreaking Oscar-winning film and it resonates today now more than ever,” Steve Bunnell, Iconic Events’ CEO, said in the release. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with our friends at MGM and Park Circus to ring in Pride Month with a hugely fun, celebratory fan favorite that truly pops on the big screen and will leave you singing and dancing with pride in the aisles.”The film’s costume designers Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel won the Oscar for Best Costume Design in 1995 for the “legendary” designs featured in the film.
Gardiner famously wore a dress she had made from more than 250 American Express Gold cards that she had actually designed for Priscilla.
