Mart Crowley: August 21, 1935-March 8, 2020 (Image via video still) Mart Crowley, who changed American theater with his trailblazing — and just plain blazing — gay-themed play The Boys in the Band (1968), died Sunday.

He was 84. Crowley's death was first reported by writer Michael Musto. He reportedly suffered a heart attack, had surgery, but passed away while recovering from surgery.
