Gavin Christopher Newsom (born October 10, 1967) is an American politician and businessman who is the 40th governor of California, serving since January 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 49th lieutenant governor of California from 2011 to 2019 and as the 42nd mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.
During a bill signing ceremony Wednesday focused on legislation strengthening reproductive health care services in California, Governor Gavin Newsom also signed into law legislation that protects the health care privacy of LGBTQ patients and others.
Assembly Bill 1184 ensures the privacy rights of people receiving sensitive health care services, such as gender-affirming care, are not violated by their health care providers.
It is one of two bills addressing transgender issues authored this year by Assemblyman David Chiu (D-San Francisco). Sponsored by Planned Parenthood, AB 1184 prohibits health care providers from disclosing services a patient receives under an insurance policy held by another person, such as a parent or spouse.
