Susan Collins called 9-1-1 over the weekend after she felt threatened when someone wrote an abortion rights message on the sidewalk in front of her house.The scary message read “Susie, please, Mainers want WHPA —> vote yes, clean up your mess” and was written in red, white, and blue sidewalk chalk outside of the Republican senator’s home in Maine.Per CNN:The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which Collins voted against sending to the Senate floor in February, would codify the right to abortion into law nationwide and ban restrictions on abortion access.The Senate is expected to vote to advance a version of the bill on Wednesday, a move that is likely to fail amid Republican opposition.
Collins, who has introduced her own bill with fellow Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska to codify abortion rights established by Roe v.
Wade, has argued that the Democrats’ measure is too broad.Collins, who supported the confirmations of Supreme Court justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, has come under fire after a leaked majority opinion draft showed they both signed onto overturning Roe v.
Wade.She called the leaked draft “completely inconsistent” with what both men “said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office,” though she also noted that “we won’t know each Justice’s decision and reasoning until the Supreme Court officially announces its opinion in this case.”After Collins’ phoned local police about the alarming message written outside of her home, the Department of Public Works was immediately sent out to wash it away with soap and water and peace was quickly restored.“We are grateful to the Bangor police officers and the City public.
