Brits sailing home from France or The Netherlands must self-isolate, in a further blow to holidaymakers. Britain's ferry firms have said they were not aware that the government has ruled that travellers lose their quarantine exemption if they sail back from either of those countries.
Many holidaymakers had hoped that driving straight through and boarding a ferry would mean they would not have to self-isolate.
But the Department for Transport has told The Independent that because the car's occupants must leave the vehicle before sailing, they are deemed to have mixed with others while the ship is in a French or Dutch port.
