A 41-year-old man in New Castle County on Tuesday tested positive for monkeypox, marking Delaware’s first reported case of the virus.
Monkeypox spreads through close skin-to-skin contact, and currently, cases of the virus are concentrated among men who have sex with men.
Camp Rehoboth reported the case on its Twitter page on Wednesday, along with information about monkeypox symptoms and how to prevent transmission.
According to a press release from the Delaware Department of Public Health, the infected individual is self-isolating, and the DPH is working to determine potential close contacts. “The Delaware Division of Public Health has prepared to respond to MPX cases,” DPH Interim Director Rick Hong said in the press release. “As we work to confirm our first case in the state, we encourage Delawareans to be aware of being in close intimate contact with individuals who have rashes or flu-like symptoms.
