At the time, he was the first rugby union player to come out as gay. Rugby union and rugby league are variations of rugby. Welshman Gareth Thomas had already made history as the first high-profile rugby league player to come out as gay in 2009.Stanley’s career included stints with Saracens FC, Bedford Blues and the Ealing Trailfinders.
