World champion Josh Kerr has spoken of his pride after being named captain of the Paris 2024 Olympics athletics squad.The Scot is preparing for battle with arch rival Jakob Ingebrigtson for the 1500m gold a year on from stunning the Norwegian to win the world championship in Budapest.
Kerr, who won bronze in Tokyo last time out, has now been named as the skipper for the 64-strong athletics squad in Paris after being voted into the role by his team mates.He follows in the footsteps of Britain’s fastest ever woman Dina Asher-Smith.
And the 26-year-old from Edinburgh, who also won the indoor 3000m world championship gold in Glasgow earlier this year, said: “I’m truly honoured with the trust shown by my teammates to lead us into these Games.
I want to be a supporter for the most experienced and an open book for our first timers, and do all I can to help us win those percentage battles over the next couple of weeks.“Us athletes have had the best of the best support staff and set-up provided to us in preparing for these Games and we want to repay that with our performances out there next week.”Olympic Head Coach at UK Athletics, Paula Dunn, said, “Congratulations to Josh for receiving this honour from his team-mates for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
