President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday announced he will nominate U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to become the next secretary of state.
Rubio has represented Florida in the U.S. Senate since 2011. He ran for president in 2016. The Florida Republican in 2022 defended the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law that Gov.
Ron DeSantis signed. Rubio that year also voted against the Respect for Marriage Act that passed with bipartisan support. Rubio would succeed Secretary of State Antony Blinken if confirmed.
