At Sunday's BAFTAs, Oscar winner Ariana DeBose performed a cringeworthy rap that name-checked the high-profile nominees, who were shown white-knuckling it through the whole thing: It was reminiscent of — but of course could never eclipse — THIS: Speaking of the BAFTAs, there were quite a few surprises.
Critics a couple of years ago decried the lack of nominees of color when there are always so many deserving contenders. Well, this year, not one but TWO frontrunners — Ke Huy Quan and Angela Bassett — were bested by white counterparts. (All were brilliant.) For me, the biggest surprise was that veteran Colin Farrell couldn't fend off Austin Butler for Best Actor.
If he can't win a BAFTA, he sure as hell will not win an Oscar for The Banshees of Inisherin. It seems guilds and perhaps people in general are obsessed with biopic performances.
