Thursday is the annual Intersex Awareness Day. Intersex Awareness Day commemorates the world’s first-ever intersex protest that took place in Boston on Oct.
26, 1996. The Washington Blade this week spoke with Kimberly Zieselman, a senior policy advisor to Jessica Stern, the special U.S.
envoy to advance the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex persons. BLADE: What is intersex? ZIESELMAN: Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a person with one or more sex characteristics (including genitals, internal reproductive organs, chromosome patterns and hormone levels) that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.
In some cases, intersex traits are visible at birth while in others they are not apparent until puberty. Some intersex variations may not be physically apparent at all.
