Did you know that what appears to be the first depicted gay couple in history can be found in an Ancient Egyptian tomb? The depiction shows Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum as “royal confidants”, according to the descriptions on the hieroglyphics.Located in the Saqqara necropolis, one of the largest and most elaborately decorated burial sites of ancient Egypt, this tomb dates back to around 2400 BC.

On its entrance, the inscription “Joined in life and joined in death” can be found, as an impassioned phrase that reflects the enduring bond between the two pictured men.

Inside the tomb, the two figures embrace with noses touching, a pose of marital intimacy within the connotations of Egyptian art.Despite the fact that they are believed to have had their respective wives, the representation of these two men is the central message of the panel, with their families, wives, and children almost as extra figures. However, it should be noted that some scholars speculate the couple could’ve been twins, as it was very common in Egyptian culture to have sibling relationships within the same lineages.

This debate whether they were lovers or brothers continues decades after. People are free to have their own interpretations as no professor or expert holds the absolute truth to reach a definite conclusion. Thus, if they were indeed lovers, it is a positive suggestion that the Pharaoh openly accepted their relationship, as the tomb is considered one of the largest and most beautiful in the necropolis. This is another example of not just how homosexuality was normalised and accepted in Ancient Egypt, but also how same-sex relationships have been undisguisedly occuring throughout history.

queer STARS show Love audience fun FIVE The ‘Queer Eye’ Fab Five spill on Vegas hangovers & why this “felt like Season One all over again”
Netflix dropped its second new season of Queer Eye in 2024, only this time there’s one major difference: They’re in Las Vegas!Well, that and—for the first time since lifestyle makeover series was revived in 2018—the central Fab Five has seen a shift to its roster, with Jeremiah Brent taking over the mantle of the group’s “home design expert” from former member Bobby Berk.Thankfully, Brent has no issue fitting in with the gang as they galavant around Sin City, bringing a little taste and a whole lotta self-confidence to the lives of a retired Vegas showgirl, a world-famous magician, and even the wizard Merlin himself. However, the real magic of the new Season 9 isn’t just the chance to see how a newbie like Brent adjusts to Queer Eye‘s emotion-forward brand of makeovers (hint: there seem to be even more tears than usual), but in the way his presence seems to have reignited the rest of the Fab Five’s passion for what they do.With that in mind—and in the spirt of the holiday season—Queerty sat down for a quick chat with the star to learn about the great gift this latest batch of episodes has given them. The catch? They couldn’t all just say “Jeremiah Brent.” But even still, their answers highlight what makes the Fab Five dynamic so special… and maybe even spill a little tea about some drunken nights out with Adele.
