A prominent LGBTQ activist is reportedly among those under consideration for U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.)’s Senate seat once he resigns next month.

Newsweek on Tuesday reported Garden State Equality Executive Director Christian Fuscarino is among those who New Jersey Gov.

Phil Murphy could potentially appoint to Menendez’s seat. A federal jury on July 16 convicted Menendez of corruption charges.

The New Jersey Democrat on Tuesday announced he will resign from the U.S. Senate on Aug. 20. Newsweek described Fuscarino, who has been Garden State Equality’s executive director since 2016, as “a staunch supporter of Murphy” who could become the country’s first openly gay U.S.
