In this exclusive clip for Netflix’s upcoming queer dramedy Everything Now, Sophie Wilde’s character is urged to embrace her inner Cady Heron.

Set to premiere 5 October, the series follows a 16-year-old called Mia (Wilde) who “returns home after a lengthy recovery from an eating disorder”. “She is thrust back into the chaotic world of sixth form only to find that her friends have moved on with teen life without her,” reads the synopsis. “Along with an ever-evolving bucket list, three best mates and a major new crush, Mia throws herself headfirst into a world of dating, parties and first kisses, soon discovering that not everything in life can be planned for.” Taken from episode three, the clip sees Mia and Noah Thomas’ character Will discuss how she can catch the eye of her crush, Carli (Jessie Mae Alonzo). “Let me tell you, you’re playing this wrong,” Will says to Mia. “This wannabe ingénue stuff… You’re not an actor, Mia.

Just be yourself.” After Mia reminds him that she was “hospitalised for several months,” he tells her to “augment” and “be yourself, but be sly about it.

Be Cady Heron!” Mia is confused, having seemingly never heard of Cady Heron or Mean Girls (despicable!), which leads to Will educating her about Lindsay Lohan’s iconic character and her relationship with Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett). “Cady Heron let Aaron Samuels tutor her, and it didn’t matter that he didn’t know any of the answers, just as long as she could stare at him, all wide eyed and dreamy,” he explains, before sharing his own personal experience with the “cheese guy”.
