HIV diagnosis.Back in 2011, Iain Johnston, 62, from Edinburgh, began feeling unwell, describing his symptoms as "flu-ish." A few days later, he collapsed during a concert and woke up in the hospital, where he was diagnosed with meningitis.
His condition was critical, and his family was called to prepare for the worst. Further tests revealed that Iain was HIV-positive, and the virus had severely compromised his immune system due to the late diagnosis, reports Edinburgh Live.As a result of his condition, Iain lost most of his hearing permanently, temporarily lost his ability to speak, and relied on walking sticks for a year.
In addition to the physical toll, he faced overwhelming loneliness, vivid nightmares, and emotional exhaustion. Many of his friends distanced themselves from him, leaving him to face his diagnosis in isolation.
However, Iain is determined to challenge the stigma surrounding HIV. He emphasises that an HIV diagnosis is not the "death sentence" many still believe it to be.
