The family of the late trailblazing musician SOPHIE has announced a posthumous album to ‘honour her legacy’. In a statement on Monday (24 June), SOPHIE’s record labels Future Classic and Transgressive Records announced that her family “approached” them to release an album “from the material that she was so close to completing”. “Since then this self-titled and final SOPHIE album was lovingly brought into being by SOPHIE’s family,” they said. “As label partners, we’re humbled and overjoyed to share this music in celebration of SOPHIE’s life and her extraordinary impact on culture.” SOPHIE’s family, who contacted her “dear friends with whom she envisioned the album”, said it “feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most.” They described the album as the “story of SOPHIE’s musical journey, a cacophony of skill and creative vision, eclipsing time and genre”.

SOPHIE tragically passed away on 30 January 2021 following an accidental fall from a three-story balcony in Athens, Greece. A producer for artists such as Madonna, Charli XCX and MØ, SOPHIE only released one album in her lifetime, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, which received widespread critical acclaim.

With her Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album, SOPHIE made history as the first openly trans artist to be nominated in this category.

Following her death, Charli XCX dedicated her fifth studio album Crash to SOPHIE, while ‘So I’, taken from her follow-up album Brat, is about her “knotty exploration of her grief”.

Kamala Harris‘ ascension to the top of the 2024 presidential ticket, there’s been some good-natured joking about a characteristic shared among many of her rumored VP contenders. Though Kamala’s possible VP picks may look conservative, they all boast strong records on LGBTQ+ issues.
