And, as we get ready to kick off the gayest month of the year, our minds can’t help but wander to one place in particular: Fire Island, the queer utopia just off the coast of New York.Of course, we’re sure you’re familiar with the fantastic gay rom-com Fire Island, which marks its two-year anniversary this next week, on June 3.
But writer/star Joel Kim Booster’s inspired riff on Pride & Prejudice is far from the only time film & television have turned their attention to the LGBTQ+ friendly island getaway. With that in mind, to kick off Pride Month—and summer!—we’re taking a look back at four very different pieces of entertainment from over the years that take the action (in a wide range of genres) to Fire Island. So, slap on some sunscreen, and read on for Fire Island-set streaming picks to watch this weekend. Happy Pride! No, this Fire Island isn’t the excellent romantic comedy about friendship and finding love starring Bowen Yang and Joel Kim Booster… This low-budget slasher, directed by Myles Clohessy, stars cutie Connor Paolo as the depressed Troy, who reluctantly agrees to go to Fire Island in the off-season during the pandemic to get his mind off his boyfriend, who took his own life months earlier.
Of course, there’s a masked killer running around, picking off hottie tourists and locals alike. Look for appearances by gay faves like Jonathan Bennett and a whole lot of blood and guts.
