Scott Bessent becomes first out gay man appointed as Treasury Secretary after receiving bipartisan support

In a statement, Coons said, “While I disagree with many of his policy positions, particularly his support for extending tax cuts for the wealthy and President Trump’s tariff threats, I hope that he will focus the Treasury Department on bringing down costs for middle-class Americans.”Bessent grew up in South Carolina.
He studied at Yale and then embarked on a career in investment management. He worked for several years with a George Soros-affiliated hedge fund, leading the firm’s London office in the late 90s.
Bessent founded his own Key Square Group in 2015. He’s reported to be worth around $500 million.As Treasury Secretary, he’s expected to push to renew the tax cuts Trump introduced in 2017 and to oversee the use of tariffs on goods coming in from certain countries.
