Fire Island—and where’s our sequel BTW?) The award-winning director and screenwriter has flipped the script on Ang Lee’s 1993 film of the same name with a foursome cast that includes Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Korean star Han Gi-Chan who may quickly become the focus of our summer stanning.While LGBTQ+ rights have evolved since the original film, Ahn reimagines the narrative of two queer couples living together as the women seek a donor after unsuccessful IVF treatments and the guys tackle a pesky green card scenario and conservative Korean grandmother.
Screenwriter James Schamus, who worked on the original, is back onboard for the refresh. When the matriarch (Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung, Minari) arrives for what she anticipates to be an extravagant, traditional wedding, the queers temporarily jump back in the closet.
But as we all know, the truth always comes out. The Wedding Banquet premiered at Sundance earlier this week and arrives in theaters April 18.
