The 10 US states with the highest populations of LGBTQIA+ adults have been revealed. Approximately 14.1 million queer adults are proudly living across America and make up 5.6 per cent of the population, according to a new data release.
The research, which was carried out by UCL School of Law, studied data from the 2020-2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to estimate and percentage the number LGBTQIA+ adults across the country.
Washington D.C. came out on top as having the highest percentage of LGBTQIA+ people. Although the study concluded that people who identify as LGBTQIA+ live in all regions of the US, the South is the most densely populated part at approximately 37 per cent of the country’s overall queer population.
In contrast, less than 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ people live in the Northeast, while 20.6 per cent live in the Midwest, 24.2 per cent are in the West.
