‘Alceste’Oct. 7 and 8IN SeriesGALA Hispanic Theatre$35-$65Inseries.org For Timothy Nelson, the out artistic director of IN Series, each new production is an inspired mélange.
Nelson typically finds himself blending sources from all over and creating something disparate from the parts. He says, “I feel like a sculptor who works from found objects.” IN Series’ bold season opener “Alceste” is no exception.
Nelson brings together Euripides’ Greek masterpiece “Alcestis” (5th Century BCE), literally theater’s first ever tragicomedy; music from two Handel operas based on the same Greek myth; as well as words from poets Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, and new material from D.C.
playwright Sybil Roberts. The Nelson-directed world premiere focuses on royal couple King Admeto and Alceste respectively played by real life husband and wife KenYatta Rogers and Michelle Rogers.
