House votes to keep Santos in Congress

U.S. Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) survived a resolution to expel him from Congress with a vote of 213-179 on Wednesday night.

The resolution was introduced by U.S. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-N.Y.), and was backed by other GOP members of the New York delegation, all in vulnerable swing districts.

Earlier on Wednesday, new House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) had voiced opposition to removing Santos without due process. On Oct.

10, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York handed Santos a 23-count superseding indictment, alleging a bevy of financial crimes including credit card fraud, conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, access device fraud, false statements to the Federal Election Commission and falsifying records to obstruct the commission.
