Declan Gallagher insists Dundee United’s players have to handle the big burden of expectation that comes with playing for the club. The title-chasing Terrors suffered a damaging defeat at home on Tuesday night to Airdrieonians who secured all three points thanks to second-half goals from Gabby McGill and Josh O’Connor.
The final whistle was greeted with a barrage of boos from the United fans and while Jim Goodwin’s side remains top of the Championship, Raith have drawn level on points following their draw with Morton.Scotland international Gallagher did not pull his punches in his assessment of the poor performance against Airdrie and he insisted the United squad needs to start thriving under pressure - otherwise they have no chance of surviving in the Premiership if they do finally win promotion.
The 33-year-old centre-half said: “I know it’s not what people want to hear at this time of the season but it was poor, an off-night and we didn’t deserve anything from the game.“It’s only our fourth defeat this season, but it’s not great because we know the expectations of this club and the expectations of the fans, wanting us to win every game.
The expectation levels should be that high because Dundee United is a team that should be in the Premiership, simple as that.“If boys can’t play under that expectation, then what chance have they got in the top league?
