Hearing meaningful words at an important time in one’s life can lead to personal growth and change. While at university, I heard the right words about homosexuality from the right messenger, Rev.
Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC). Rev. Perry celebrates his 84th birthday on July 27. Founded in 1968, newspapers once referred to MCC as the “Metropolitan (Gay) Church.” My hometown newspaper, the Atlanta Journal, has, since the 1970s, reported on the growth of the city’s MCC.
Rev. Perry regularly visited Atlanta. At a young age, I learned that an openly gay man in Atlanta got attention. Perry’s autobiography “The Lord is my Shepherd, and He knows I’m Gay,” is his testimony about keeping his faith during his struggle to reconcile it with his sexuality.
It was an important book that captured the attention of many other allies, including newspaper editors and religious columnists.
