U.S. Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), who was appointed 18 days ago by California Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the Senate seat left vacant by U.S.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s death, announced Thursday that she would not run for a full Senate term in 2024. Butler said in the statement she made the decision after considering “what kind of life I want to have, what kind of service I want to offer and what kind of voice I want to bring forward.” “Knowing you can win a campaign doesn’t always mean you should run a campaign.

Barbara Lee of Oakland, Katie Porter of Irvine and Adam Schiff of Burbank. Former Dodgers Major League Baseball star Steve Garvey, a Republican, also recently said he’s running.
