Tenn. could lose billions in federal funds over anti-transgender laws

By the time North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper signed into law the repeal of House Bill 2, also known as the “Bathroom Bill,” in 2017 it was estimated that the state had lost up to $3.5 billion in revenue.

Almost six years later, more than 500 similar anti-transgender bills have been introduced in nearly all 50 states and economists anticipate devastating financial consequences.

Tennessee, which borders North Carolina, on July 1 enacted a law that bans health care providers from offering gender-affirming care to minors.

Trans minors that were receiving gender-affirming care prior to the law taking effect had to stop treatment. The Tennessee General Assembly Fiscal Review Committee issued a report on Feb.
