Amethyst is coming out. The 29-year-old Connecticut native and star of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 came out as transgender in a post on social media.
In a note posted over the weekend, she thanking fans for supporting her upcoming album, Amy, and explaining its title’s significance to her identity. It’s a different sense of happiness that is slowly but surely bringing back my self-assurance, and every day it gets easier to look in the mirror.” She added that she’s going by the name Amy when out of drag, which she credits to her season 15 castmate Malaysia Babydoll Foxx, who gave it to her during production of their season. “I feel a lot of pressure to pick the perfect name, but in the meantime, this is a comfy placeholder for me,” she wrote.
Because her insurance won’t fully cover some of her desired procedures, she has started a fundraiser for donations to help her with facial feminization surgery, with an end goal of $10,000.
