Following their shocking departure, Smith took to their social media channels to explain the incident. “Today in soundcheck, I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end,” they wrote. “During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice.
I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show, but into the fourth song, I could feel something was really wrong.” The Grammy winner added that they were left “heartbroken” over not being able to finish the show.” In addition to cancelling their Manchester show, Smith’s vocal cord injury forced them to back out of their performances in Birmingham and Glasgow.
