No cabinet members in the newly reshuffled UK government openly identify as being members of the LGBTQIA+ community. As highlighted by ITV’s Paul Brand, the new cabinet – like the previous one – is scarcely lacking in representation at a time when LGBTQIA+ issues are at the forefront of politics.
Lee Anderson, a senior Tory MP who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party, in February even went as far as to say that the next general election will “probably” be fought on “a mix of culture wars and trans debate”.
Writing on Twitter, Brand said: “Whether or not you think it’s important for [the] cabinet to reflect broader society (some say it’s tokenism), it is notable that [the] cabinet will be making policies on behalf of a community which it doesn’t reflect.
