Troye Sivan and Orville Peck might be capturing our hearts these days as their chart-topping hits represent the latest wave of LGBTQ+ artists making a name for themselves in the music industry, they stand on the shoulders of previous generations who often found themselves playing in a minor key when it came to being out and open.
But their music and their legacy lives on. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel dipped its toe in this narrative with Shy Baldwin’s storyline in Seasons 2 through 4, in which actor Leroy McClain played a closeted pop star circa 1950s.
More recently, some of our favorite gay entertainers are stepping into the lives of mainstream vocalists, including Matt Doyle’s portrayal of Ol’ Blue Eyes in Sinatra, The Musical, and Jonathan Groff‘s upcoming Broadway star turn as Bobby Darin in Just in Time.Over the years, the closet door has cracked open, and we can only hope that the future holds more opportunities for openly queer musical artists from all genres.
