Mondaire Jones lost his bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), a major defeat for Democrats who hoped that flipping New York’s 17th Congressional District would help deliver their party control of the U.S.
House of Representatives. As of Wednesday morning, with many races too close to call, it was not yet clear whether the Democrats would succeed in regaining control of the chamber.
Jones, who is openly gay, represented NY-17 in the House from 2021-2023 and was widely considered a rising star in the progressive flank of the Democratic Party. “What an absolute ass-kicking,” Lawler said in a victory speech to supporters. “Tonight, the Hudson Valley told Mondaire Jones to beat it.” Their race was among the most closely watched and well funded contests of the 2024 election cycle.
