Former President George W. Bush Bush initiative saves millions of lives around the world DAVID TAFFET | Senior Staff Writer taffet@dallasvoice.com The Dallas-based PEPFAR program, now celebrating its 20th year, has saved more than 20 million lives in Africa and around the world.

In 2003, the singer Bono persuaded President George W. Bush to allocate the money to distribute AIDS medications throughout Africa.

The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief — better known as PEPFAR — continues to distribute HIV medications in more than 50 countries and operates from the Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.
