In an interview with the Gay Times, Matt shared the inner turmoil he faced while concealing his sexuality, admitting: "I'm very proud [of my sexuality], and I'm no longer afraid." Hailing from Bromley, the 30 year old singer triumphed over Saara Aalto to claim the coveted crown on the ITV talent show back in 2016.

He explained how it was "the only song I've struggle to record" due to the power ballad's poignant meaning. He added: "That’s my story. That’s my truth.
And it’s one of the most important stories I’m going to tell. I’ve been hiding who I was, and I haven’t really opened up. I’ve never let anybody in.This song is an apology to the first man I fell in love with because I asked a lot of him. "I said to him, ‘You’re not allowed to tell anyone about this’ and he loved me enough to do so.
