Kit Connor is set to make his Broadway debut in a modern day version of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Directed by Sam Gold with music from Jack Antonoff, the Heartstopper star will be the Romeo to Rachel Zegler‘s Juliet.

The official synopsis reads: “The youth are fucked. Left to their own devices in their parents’ world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate. “The intoxicating high of passion quickly descends into a brutal chaos that can only end one way.” A press release also added: “Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy now belongs to a new generation on the edge.” In a statement, Gold said: “With the presidential election coming up in November, I felt like making a show this fall that celebrates youth and hope, and unleashes the anger young people feel about the world they are inheriting.” Connor and Zegler teased the upcoming production with matching Instagram posts of their character’s initials.

They also used emojis of a heart and dagger in their caption and tagged the location as Verona, Italy, where the iconic play is set.

The official Instagram account for the play also shared the first photo of the duo, in which Zegler can be seen resting her head on Connor’s chest.
