U.S. Track Athlete Trey Cunningham Comes Out as Gay

Trey Cunningham is coming out. The 25-year-old athlete, who competed in last month’s U.S. Olympic Trials, has come out publicly as gay.

In an interview with The New York Times, he said coming out to his family in private five years ago was the “scariest thing I’ve ever done.” Keep reading to find out more… His reason for coming out publicly came from a track training technique he uses. “We say our goals out loud.

If there’s something we want to achieve, we say it. Putting something in words makes it real,” the Florida State University alum said.

He added that he didn’t “explore the idea” of being gay until college, considering he had grown up in a conservative, rural part of Alabama, adding that his hometown of Winfield was “the sort of place where you did not want to be the gay kid at school.” When asked if he thought coming out publicly would change anything, he told Us Weekly: “I’m just Trey, and apparently it’s a special thing that I like to kiss guys.” Several stars also just came out recently.
