The gays are giving Anita Bryant the eulogy she truly deserves
announced to the press. For the rest of her public life, Bryant was synonymous with anti-LGBTQ+ hate. During one notable news conference in Iowa, a demonstrator approached Bryant and smushed a banana cream pie in her face.“At least it was a fruit pie,” she famously remarked.
Her ad-lib was pointed. “Some took that remark as an innocent allusion to her job promoting fresh produce; others saw it as a pointed comment on a longtime epithet for gay men,” writes the New York Times in its obituary.
Afterwards, Bryant prayed for the man to be “delivered from his deviant lifestyle.”On Friday, queer folx expressed the expected level of sympathy against someone who believed queer people need to be rescued.
