Adm. Rachel Levine is the first transgender person to have to get Senate approval for appointment to her position. She is an admiral in the U.S.
Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and is the first openly transgender four-star officer in any of the eight uniformed services.
Trained as a pediatrician, Levine has been a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Penn State College of Medicine. She served as secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health before being appointed to her cabinet position in the Biden administration.
