Trans-Latinx DMV, a D.C.-based organization that provides services for transgender Latino people, held a grand opening ceremony on July 15 for its new drop-in center at 3417 14th St., N.W.
in the city’s Columbia Heights neighborhood. The group describes itself on its website as a “Two-Spirit Trans Womxn led organization that centers the needs of Black & Indigenous Trans-Latinx people living in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.” Saying it is a chapter of the Los Angeles-based national TransLatin@ Coalition, Trans-Latinx DMV “addresses the community’s issues and needs by working with local, national organizations and groups, to change the landscape and livelihood of Transgender, Intersex, and Gender Variant Latinx folks,” the group says on its website. “This new space is just the beginning to provide much needed culturally competent bilingual services in Spanish and English to transgender immigrants,” according to longtime D.C.
gay Latino activist David Perez. Perez noted that Trans-Latinx DMV is headed by D.C.-area community advocate Alexa Elizabeth Rodriguez, who is serving as the group’s executive director.
A write-up on Rodriguez provided by Perez says she is a native of El Salvador, where she founded that nation’s first support group for people living with HIV and transgender women.
